Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join HKN?
Candidacy for membership in Eta Kappa Nu is by invitation only. All undergraduate students that have met certain time and scholastic ranking will be invited each Fall and Winter semester. All graduate students qualify each induction round, given the approval of the Department Chair and Faculty Advisor (we collect these on behalf of graduate students).
Why was I invited to HKN?
Eta Kappa Nu seeks out students who demonstrate three core tenets: scholarship, character, and attitude. All undergraduate students that have met certain degree completion requirements and are in the upper scholastic ranks of their classes are invited each Fall and Winter semester. All graduate students are invited each semester, given the approval of the Department Chair and Faculty Advisor.
What are the membership qualifications?
Students who have completed one-half of the degree requirements and who have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper quarter of their class may be elected.
Students who have completed three-fourths of their degree requirements and have a cumulative scholastic rank in the upper third of their class may be elected.
All graduate students are qualified to join IEEE-HKN, given that the Head of the Department and Faculty Advisor grant approval. No approval is needed from the department where the student completed his/her undergraduate work. Each graduate student will be e-mailed each Fall and Winter semester with an invitation to join IEEE-HKN. If you are a graduate student and do not receive this e-mail, please contact us to receive your invitation.
All faculty of the Brigham Young University Electrical and Computer Engineering Department that hold the rank of Assistant Professor or higher are qualified to join IEEE-HKN. If you are a faculty member that meets these requirements and are interested in joining but have not received an invitation, please contact us to receive your invitation.
